I’m glad that I have been introduced to this world full of new, unique characters. It’s refreshing to read about something that isn’t vampire or werewolf but something totally different. I am talking about the newest type of fictional creature I’d like to be (ha!): a Shade. I also liked the fact that in this story, the Dark is the good side and the Light the evil side.
Minutes Before Sunset by Shannon A. Thompson was an exciting, action-packed, fast-paced read — I would’ve finished it sooner if not for my sudden extracurricular activity, i.e., dancing. It has all the elements that I look for in books: a world different from ours, characters that human beings would think are out of the ordinary, young individuals that are destined to save the world, fight scenes (lots of it), friendship, bravery, and, most of all, magic. One thing that I wasn’t at first sure I was going to like was the romance. Honestly, the romance genre makes me roll my eyes. I usually like books with only a little amount of the boyfriend-girlfriend type of love. Especially instalove. (I’m trying to change how I feel about that by now reading romance books.) I have to admit though that as I got to know the two main characters, I found their love rather sweet. Or: At first I wanted to hit Eric (or Shoman in his Shade form) in the head — ‘cause he’s impossible — but as the story progressed and as I got know him more, I was like, Aww, he’s actually a good and caring person, and I want him and Jessica to be together. In the end, I actually cared about the characters. Random comment: One thing I can’t understand about myself is how I like Eric and Jessica together more than I like Shoman and Jessica together. I mean, Eric and Shoman are the same person, just in two different forms. Also, I found myself wanting to know more about the Light, more about how they feel and what they think and more about their history. Probably in the next books?
Anyway, Minutes Before Sunset is a fun, thrilling read — despite the ending being heartbreaking. 😦 Well, there’s still books two and three, so here’s to hoping the trilogy has a happy ending!
Oh, and by the way, did I mention how pretty the cover is?
I’d like to thank Shannon A. Thompson for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
